Masculine Birthday

Good Tuesday morning, Everyone! Wow! November is nearly gone. Can you believe it? Christmas will soon be here and gone, and it will be time for new beginnings. Are you ready???

Seems like last week we were preparing for Y2K. Where does the time go, anyway???

Part of my time is spent making cards to give or send to friends and family. I need to be making more Christmas cards, but, unfortunately, a couple of deaths in the community necessitate sympathy cards. AND, there are a couple of family birthdays which require a card as well. So, on with the show.

Today I used one of my all time favorite stamp sets, Lovely as a Tree. I have made my wishes known to Stampin’ Up! that I hope they NEVER retire this one. It is so versatile for so many different occasions.

card front

There are some sheets in the Wood Textures Designer Series Paper about which I am not too fond, so I challenged myself to use some of them, somehow, some way. I think it was pretty successful.

One of the lighter colored, more formal sheets became the background for my card front. In Early Espresso I stamped the line of trees from Lovely as a Tree. So far, so good.

Next, the sentiment from the now retired Designer Tin of Cards, also in Early Espresso, finishes the stamping on the front.

A length of Burlap Ribbon is wrapped around and taped to the back. Then, to add some color to the front, I ran a length of Jute twine through my Tranquil Tide stamp pad and let it dry. While it was drying I cut the card base from Tranquil Tide, the mat from the flip side of another piece of Wood Textures DSP that I used for the front, and a mat for the front from retired Mint Macaron. The Wood Textures DSP mat was liquid glued to the card base.

detail

The twine was still a bit damp, so I used the additional drying time to sponge Soft Suede around the edge of my stamped front.

Assembly was pretty quick and easy. I wrapped the stained twine around 3 fingers three times and tied off the bow with a separate strand. This was tied around the three strands previously wrapped around the card over the Burlap Ribbon and also taped on the back.

I have some little leaf brads I picked up at one of our local stores. There was a green one very close in color to the Mint Macaron, and a brown one. These were attached to the front after piercing a hole with my Paper Piercing tool and the Stampin’ Pierce Mat as they were not going to be where my 1/8″ hand held punch would reach.

Those attached, I liquid glued the front to its mat and adhered it to the card base with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

For the inside, I used the same color Wood Textures DSP, and stamped the end of the row of trees in Early Espresso. The sentiment, from Happy Birthday Gorgeous, was stamped in Early Espresso, while the second sentiment, also from that stamp set, was stamped in Tranquil Tide.

inside

After sponging the edges in Soft Suede, this was liquid glued to the Mint Macaron mat and into the card base.

The Envelope front was stamped the same as the inside of the card. The flap is covered in a scrap of the same Wood Textures DSP as the front.envelope front

I think makes a very nice masculine card.

Stampin’ Up! Moon Baby

As promised, here is today’s card. It is not a Christmas card. It is not a holiday card of any kind, nor is it a seasonal card.

We have a new addition to our family….extended family that is. This calls for a special card for a special little boy.

card front

I began with a Very Vanilla card base, onto which I Liquid Glued a Soft Sky mat. A panel of Falling in Love Designer Series Paper (retired) was adhered to a mat of Very Vanilla, around which I wrapped  a strand of Silver Metallic Thread three times, taping it to the back. This was Liquid Glued to the Soft Sky mat.

Next I stamped the moon and baby from Moon Baby stamp set in Smokey Slate and colored him in with the new Stampin’ Blend alcohol markers, using the Pool Party and Daffodil Delight markers. You will note that this baby has HAIR! Yes, ’tis true, in our family babies are born with a lot of hair. I used my Early Espresso Stampin’ Write Marker for the hair. This was then fussy cut. I cut off the star, pierced the moon with the Paper-piercing Tool, wrapped more Silver Metallic Thread around the moon, tied it and taped the ends to the back.

Another hole pierced in the star allowed me to run a strand of Silver Metallic Thread through it and tie it to the moon, leaving it to dangle below.

detail

A  Soft Sky square cut with the Layering Squares Framelits was adhered to a Very Vanilla scalloped square, also from Layering Squares. The Baby and moon were attached to the layered squares on point with Stampin’ Dimensionals. The square was also adhered to the front of the card with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

To finish the front, I stamped the sentiment from Moon Baby in Smokey Slate, using my Stamp-A-Ma-Jig to get it straight. Hmm….not quite finished. Maybe some stars? Stamped stars? Die cut foil stars? None of those. Enameled Shapes! Of course. The stars in the Brights Enameled shapes are perfect. Card front done!

On the inside I layered more of the Falling in Love DSP onto a Soft Sky mat. Another scalloped square, this time in Soft Sky, as a mat for the Very Vanilla square and set on point was perfect for the sentiment. This also is from the Moon Baby stamp set and stamped in Smokey Slate.

inside

The three stars from the same stamp set were stamped in So Saffron and colored in with my Stampin’ Blend marker. On to the envelope!

Another Baby and moon stamped in Smokey Slate and colored as for the card fill the lower left corner, while 3 stars fit in the other corner. The flap received more of the Falling in Love DSP to finish this project.card and envelope front

flap

I enjoyed the change of pace from Christmas and Thanksgiving cards, but have many more of those to make, so I better get with it.

Another nice day in Iowa tells me I SHOULD put up some outside lights today, or I will have to do it in the cold if I procrastinate.

Not a creative bone in my body today!

Well, I guess it happens. Today I hit a creative wall where even the thought of trying to make something just gave me the willies! That has never happened before. Maybe it is spring fever? Could be, as the temperature is currently 72 degrees, about 30 degrees higher than it should be this time of year.

Or, maybe it is the knowledge that I had a lot of WORK staring me in the face. Not serious work, but the clean-up after a house full of company last night, following two days of cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, prepping, cooking, etc. in preparation for that house full.

My two girls and their spouses, children and grandchildren were here as were my sister and her 4 girls and their families. My brother-in-law wasn’t feeling well, so did not attend the festivities that my 4 year old Great Granddaughter called the “Thanksgiving Party”. and to her, I guess, it was a party. She got to see and play with her 8 boy cousins (second cousins, but never mind). Yep, of the 30 who were here, 10 were under the age of 10 and only ONE GIRL! As you can imagine, the decibel level rose pretty high at times in my not-very-big-house.

And the noise wasn’t just from children playing. All the adults were talking at once it seemed as we all had a great time just catching up with one another. Some had not seen each other since last Thanksgiving, while for others it had been Easter the last time they were together.

Before a bountiful meal, some of which I prepared, and some brought in by all attending, we joined hands for prayer, but instead of a prayer we went around the circle and each named one thing for which they are thankful. To end, my older daughter gave the final few words of prayer and a resounding AMEN was added by all.

This year was a bit different as, for the first time in a long time, there were no extras. No in-laws, out-laws, neighbors, friends, friends of friends, or just anyone who otherwise might spend the day alone.

A couple of churches in the area prepare a thanksgiving meal for anyone who is alone (actually anyone who wants to go may do so ), so perhaps those who might have come decided to go to the church instead. At any rate, several were invited but did not come, so it was just family this year. (unless you count a boyfriend or two.)

Today, I caught up on some correspondence, my sis came to get the items left behind by her grandsons, all the food was put away or frozen, or eaten, pots, pans and serving dishes washed and put away and the stove top cleaned! No creativity there, but for some reason there was a certain amount of satisfaction in seeing everything clean, or reasonably so.

The girls, granddaughters and nieces had kindly washed the plates and silverware, but I still had the task of putting  away those things they didn’t. I have a dishwasher and told them we could just load it, but I think they enjoy visiting over the sink full of dishes.

I am not super-woman. There are things that should have gotten done that didn’t. Like the piano. I FORGOT TO DUST IT! Oh, my! the dust was thick, too. I didn’t scrub the floors either. And the company arrived before I managed to get a shower.

But, you know what? I don’t think ANY of that mattered. What did matter was the love and fellowship we all enjoyed.

While I am glad that a day is set aside to remind us to be always thankful and grateful for our many blessings, what is really important is that we gather TOGETHER to give thanks. Even the little ones who could talk said their thanks.

In closing, I want to say that creativity is a blessing too. And I am grateful to God for the gifts He has given me to be creative, to WANT to create (most of the time) and for the ability to recognize that some days you just need to work, not create.

There is always tomorrow, for most of us. And if there isn’t a tomorrow, well, then, it doesn’t really matter, does it?

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”                                                                                          1st Thessalonians l5: 18

Thankful

Good Thursday morning to you all. And a very Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving as well. The turkey is done, the ham balls also. The pies are ready to go in the oven. I still have a little picking up and the vacuuming to do, but otherwise I think I will be ready for my company when they arrive.

Today’s card is a thank you to all of you who follow me. I appreciate every one of you so very much.

front

I am thankful, and grateful for all I have been given by the Good Lord. Blessings abound, even in the time of uncertainty or trouble.

I began my card with an Early Espresso card base. Then I chose one of the Wood Textures DSP for the art piece. Into this I die cut three leaves using the Thinlit from the Colorful Seasons Bundle I love this little leaf and use it often.

Using the same die, I cut three leaves from Copper Foil Sheets. Setting this aside for the moment, I sponged a piece of Very Vanilla card stock with Crushed Curry, Cajun Craze, Old Olive, Pumpkin Pie and Elegant Eggplant. This was adhered with liquid glue to the back of the Wood Textures DSP. The Precision Base Plate is a great advantage when cutting this detailed die, or for any intricately detailed die.

Also using Liquid Glue, I adhered the copper leaves into the negative space of the Wood Textures panel. This panel is Liquid Glued to a Pumpkin Pie mat.

Using Linen Thread, I wrapped it three times around the left side of the card front, taping it on the back. I did a ‘three times around three fingers’ bow and tied it to the wrapped strands. A glue dot for extra holding power keeps it in place.

front angled

The sentiment is from the Paisleys and Posies stamp set, stamped in Versamark on a light colored Wood Textures DSP and heat embossed in Copper Stampin’ Emboss Powder. Before adding Versamark and embossing powder, rub your piece with the Emboss Buddy. This prevents embossing powder from straying off the Versamark and all over your paper. The ends were cut with the Triple Banner Punch and the banner attached with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

The completed front is adhered to the card base with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

The inside is a panel of Very Vanilla stamped all over with the leaf stamp from Colorful Seasons. I used Cajun Craze,  and Crushed Curry with some stamped full strength and some by continuing to stamp without re-inking. inside

The sentiment is also from Paisleys and Posies and is stamped in Early Espresso. My world is truly brighter because of each of you!  Thank you. This was adhered to a Pumpkin Pie mat and into the card base.

I did not have time to do the envelope which will probably have leaves stamped on the front and some Wood Texures DSP on the flap, unless I decide to stamp more of the lovely leaves!

Card Cuts: Early Espresso: 4-1/4″ x 11″ scored at 5-1/2″; Pumpkin Pie: front mat 4-1/8″ x 5-3/8″, inside mat 4-1/8″ x 5-3/8″; Very Vanilla: sponged piece3-7/8″ x 5-1/8″ inside liner 3-7/8″ x 5-3/8″; Wood Textures DSP: dark for front 3-7/8″ x 5-1/8″ light for sentiment 2″ x 4″

Stampin’ Up! Wise Men From Afar

Good Wednesday to you all. I hope you are all ready for Thanksgiving Day tomorrow. I am not, but I will be when I need to be. I have a plan and that is half the battle!

Today’s offering is probably my favorite of all the holiday cards I have done. This one is just what I wanted it to be. Not always do the ideas in my head turn into the card I thought I wanted. This one did. Take a look.

front

I began with a Sahara Sand card base. To this I Liquid Glued a panel of Gold Foil Sheets. The art piece is also Sahara Sand into which I die cut the star from Bethlehem Edgelits. Not wanting a black star, but a Gold one, I placed the Sahara Sand piece over the Basic Black mat and drew around the star onto the black. This was my guide. I did not cut the star, but a small circle using the Layering Circles Framelits. This was large enough to allow the gold panel to show through.

Next, I stamped the 3 Wise Men in Versamark, using my Stamp-A-Ma-Jig to get the placement correct. These were heat embossed with Gold Emboss Powder AFTER I swiped the surface with my Embossing Buddy. This gave me the placement for the city of Bethlehem. I wanted it to be black, like a silhouette, so had to decide whether to stamp the skyline or die cut it.

I opted to die cut, and so glad I did. The Basic Black card stock shows through and is much more silhouette looking I think. To only get part of the die to cut, I offset the top cutting plate of my Big Shot to end just at the edge of the tall building. The big shot will not cut if both plates are not covering the die. It cut perfectly. I saved all the little window pieces.

The sentiment, from Wise Men From Afar, was stamped in Versamark and heat embossed in gold. I then liquid glued the stamped, embossed and die cut panel to the Basic Black mat and onto the Gold Foil panel.

Placing the cut out piece of the city (I guess the positive), back into the space it left, I then knew where to glue the windows. Using my tweezers and liquid glue I adhered them and removed the positive city silhouette. This is so cool!

detail

For the inside I used the star from Night in Bethlehem and stamped it in Versamark and heat embossed it in Gold.  I used the other sentiment from Wise Men From Afar, again in Versamark and Gold Emboss Powder.  Below it I stamped the city from Night in Bethlehem in Basic Black. Wow! I do like this. inside

This panel was glued to a Basic Black mat and into the card base.

For the Medium Crumb Cake envelope I again stamped the city in Basic Black on the front and a heat embossed gold star on the flap.

I hope you like this card as much as I like it. This one will become multiples to send to friends. Who knows, I may even package up a few to sell at our bazaar next week.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving whatever you do tomorrow.

Card Cuts: Sahara Sand: card base 4-1/4″ x 11″ scored at 5-1/2″, sentiment panels (cut 2) 3-3/4″ x 5″; Basic Black: front and inside mats (cut 2) 4″ x 5-1/4″; Gold Foil Sheets: 4-1/8″ x 5-3/8″

Happy Birthday

Today’s post was going to be a Christmas card. ‘Was’ being the operative word. I had made this birthday card using some non-Stampin’ Up! products, so thought it best to blog using all Stampin’ Up! Well, it seems my heat tool has disappeared. Completely! It sits on its own shelf near an outlet and never gets moved to anyplace else. BUT IT ISN’T THERE!! Neither is it to be found anywhere. Needless to say, the embossing I wanted to do on the Christmas card will have to wait. So, you get a birthday card instead.

front

I started with a Whisper White card base to which I adhered a mat of Powder Pink.

The Perfect Plum die cut uses a die from another company. This is mounted to a panel of Powder Pink that was die cut using the frame of the detailed die. Then, the Powder Pink panel was adhered to another panel of Perfect Plum. I don’t know if you can see it but I spritzed the whole front with Shimmer, which adds just enough (in my opinion) glimmer and sparkle.

detail

A length of Powder Pink Shimmer ribbon was wrapped around and taped to the back. A faux bow was attached with a Glue Dot. This panel was then adhered to the card base with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

The inside sentiment is from Better Together, stamped in Perfect Plum on a liner of Whisper White. Butterflies from the You Move Me stamp set were stamped in Powder Pink and Perfect Plum around the sentiment. I added the tracks with my Basic Black Stampin’ Write Marker.

inside

The Medium Whisper White envelope has more of the two colors of butterflies, both on the front and on the flap. This was a pretty quick and easy card to make. I hope you enjoy.

Stampin’ Up! Good Tidings

I hope you all are going to have a good weekend. It doesn’t seem like a Saturday to me, but that’s what the calendar says, so I guess I will believe it.

My card for today uses the Good Tidings stamp set found in the holiday catalog. I had not had an opportunity to use it before, but had seen some nice cards online and have been itching to try it.

I love holly, and this set makes pretty realistic looking holly with a two step stamp. Actually, it is a four step if you include the berries-two step for the leaves and two step for the berries. Stampin’ Up has made it easy to use by labeling each piece, 1-a, 1-b, 1-c, etc, so you know which stamp to use first. The stem is another two step. Sounds like a dance doesn’t it? I digress.

card front

The card base is Whisper White to which I Liquid Glued a panel of Old Olive.

I began stamping with a panel of Merry Music Designer Series Paper on which to do my stamping. As I had not previously used this set, I did a few practice stamps on scratch paper to get the hang of it. I am glad I did though the end product is far from perfect. Maybe the next card will be perfect!!  HA!

Using the solid leaf stamp I stamped the design in Old Olive, then over stamped using the detail stamp in Garden Green. Next, I used Real Red for the solid berry and Cherry Cobbler for the detail. These stamps really do give detail and depth to the design. There are two more stamps to this design which I couldn’t figure out at first. They are the stems and dots on the berries. I had a bit of difficulty lining them up and wished I already had the brand new Stamparatus! For these I used Crumb Cake, then Soft Suede for the second stamp.

stand up and envelope

On with the show, I mean, the stamping. Using the smaller holly leaf I used the same technique, putting one in each corner. This panel is Liquid Glued to a mat of Cherry Cobbler.

Using a length of Candy Cane Bakers Twine left over from last year (now retired), I wound it around this panel three times, securing it on the back with tape. The bow is made by wrapping the twine around three fingers three times and around two fingers three times, then pinching it together. Cut a small (5″) piece of twine to wrap around the middle, securing the loops, then tie it in a knot. You can then arrange the loops to your liking. A Glue dot holds the three strands of twine together and holds the bow as well, making it look like you tied the bow around your strands.

This panel is adhered to the card base with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

For the sentiment I stamped the Good Tidings from the stamp set of the same name in Cherry Cobbler on Whisper White and die cut it using a Layering Circles Framelit. I cut a second circle from Cherry Cobbler using one of the Layering Circles scalloped edged framelits. Liquid Glue adheres these together, and Stampin’ Dimensionals secure it to the music panel. A rhinestone colored with my Real Red Stampin’ Write Marker finishes it. Card front done!

detail

On the inside I pretty much repeated the front, only I did not stamp the larger holly leaf. Stamp the holly as before on the music, Liquid Glue the three panels together and into the card base.

I thought the music would make it difficult to read the sentiment, so it, also from the Glad Tidings set, is stamped in Cherry Cobbler on Whisper White and punched out with the Pretty Label Punch. Using my Old Olive Stampin’ Write Marker I edged the piece to make it stand out from the music background and Liquid Glued it in place. On to the envelope.

inside

A small holly and berries, stamped as before, adorns the front while more Merry Music Designer Series Paper finishes the flap. Enjoy!

I like this set and will use it again and again, I think. I hope you like it too.
