Stampin’ Up! Spooky Night

Good Friday everyone! My apologies for not posting yesterday. Just not enough hours to get everything done.

My Halloween card today was inspired by one done by my friend Mary over at Stamps – n – Lingers. You can see her card here. It is really cute, but I wanted an owl in mine.

I used Pumpkin Pie card stock for my base with a Basic Black panel on top. I used the largest circle in the Layering Circles framelits to cut the moon. I used the branch thinlit from the Colorful Seasons Bundle (You save 10% when you buy the bundle) to cut 2 branches in Basic Black, and cut one of them apart. These were dry arranged then liquid glued to the back of the panel.

The cat was punched from the Basic Black circle I cut from the panel to make my moon, using the new Cat Punch, now available from the Holiday Catalog.

The Owl is from the Spooky Cat stamp set, which coordinates with the Cat Punch and the Spooky Night Designer Series Paper. This stamp set and the cat punch come bundled letting you save 10%! I rubbed my Emboss Buddy over a piece of Basic Black and stamped the owl in Versamark. I heat embossed it with Copper Emboss Powder and fussy cut it.

The picket fence. Hmmmm. At first I was going to use the back of the Adirondack chair for the fence, but decided they were too small to hold that big cat. So, being one who believes that necessity is the mother of invention, I invented my own fence. Using a scrap of Wood Textures paper that I had embossed with the Pinewood Planks Dynamic Embossing folder left over from another project (I always keep scraps!), I proceeded to cut 1/4″ strips ( with the grain) with my Stampin’ Trimmer. These were cut into 1-1/2″ lengths with scissors and the points were cut. I wanted a rickety looking fence, so I didn’t care if the points were all even.

I cut 2 lengths ( again, with the grain) 1/8″ wide. These were the crosspieces of the fence. I put a dab of liquid glue, a tiny dab mind you, about 1/4″ down from the point ON THE BACK SIDE of each picket, and adhered them to the crosspiece, making sure to make some of them askew and not very evenly spaced. Remember, I was going for rickety here. Laying the fence face down, I put another tiny dab on each picket about 1/4″ up from the bottom and lay the crosspiece over it and pressed them together to adhere.

Mini Stampin’ Dimensionals are perfect for this fence. Just be sure to get them on straight or they will show. This was adhered to the bottom of the black panel. Using Stampin’ Dimensionals, I adhered the cat to the panel, making it look like he was sitting on the crosspiece.

Liquid glue adhered the panel to the card base. I did not glue down the branches to give more dimension. Then the embossed owl was put in place with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

The sentiment is also from Spooky Cat. Yep, I cut it apart. No one said I couldn’t, and I didn’t trust myself to only ink the part I wanted, especially since I used Versamark and Copper Emboss powder. Before stamping I used my Embossing Buddy to eliminate stray embossing. I did this after adhering the panel to the card base, but it might have been easier/better to do that stamping before putting it together.

On the inside I liquid glued a cat punched from the Spooky Night DSP to a Very Vanilla panel, fussy cut a witches hat from another sheet of the DSP and put it on the cat’s head. I guess it is a girl cat, since the hat has a bow. I used the mouse stamp, (or is it a rat?) to stamp the critter in Basic Black ink.

Using the ‘BOO’ stamp from Suite Seasons stamp set, I randomly stamped all over in both Basic Black and Pumpkin Pie. I wanted a bat somewhere, so I free-hand cut one from Basic Black card stock and liquid glued it to the upper left corner. This card is done. And, I like it, even though I am not much into Halloween. True Confession: I made a booboo (see what I did there?) so I used the bat to hide it.

The envelope received another copper embossed owl on the front, sitting on a branch stamped in Basic Black from the Colorful Seasons set. Mice, or rats if you prefer, march along the edge of the envelope flap. They are a favorite food of owls.

I hope you like this card as much as I liked Mary’s. I hate to copy anything exactly, so I used her card, found here, as inspiration.
